Few things get your attention faster than warm air coming out of the vents on a 110° Phoenix afternoon. Before you panic, a few of the most common causes are things you can check yourself, and the rest are quick fixes for a licensed technician.
1. Thermostat settings
It sounds obvious, but check that the thermostat is set to COOL and the fan is set to AUTO, not ON. When the fan is set to ON, it keeps blowing air between cooling cycles, and that air feels warm.
2. A clogged air filter
Arizona dust is relentless. A packed filter chokes airflow, can freeze the evaporator coil, and makes the system blow weak, warm air. Check your filter monthly during summer and replace it at least every 60 days.
3. Low refrigerant from a leak
If your system is low on refrigerant, it can't absorb heat from your home. Refrigerant doesn't get "used up". If it's low, there's a leak, and topping it off without fixing the leak just delays the same problem.
4. A failed capacitor
The capacitor gives your outdoor unit's motors the jolt they need to start. Extreme heat kills capacitors faster, which is why they're one of the most common summer failures in the Valley. If the indoor fan runs but the outdoor unit hums or won't start, this is a likely suspect.
5. A tripped breaker or failed compressor
Check your electrical panel for a tripped breaker. If it trips again after resetting, stop. Repeated trips mean an electrical fault that needs professional diagnosis.
